Need Some Kong Stuffing Ideas?

Then click here!

Rusty LOVES peanut butter but it's high in fat so I don't want to give him too much. The link goes to LOTS and LOTS of ideas besides peanut butter that you can stuff and then freeze to keep your dog entertained for hours.

Treats: lamb Jerky

Solid Gold Lamb Jerky.

It smells like jerky.

It looks like jerky.

Um, No, I haven't tasted it yet but it looks like it'd taste great!

In any case, it's great for dogs with limited diets - meaning there's no fillers and this doesn't have any crap in it. At the local pet store (ok, really it's Petco) they just started selling more natural and limited ingredient dog food. Very exciting! It makes the better foods for dogs more available to dog owners.

In any case:

Ingredients

Lamb
Lamb Meal
Ground Brown Rice
Cracked Oats
Tapioca Meal
Lamb Liver
Molasses
Glycerine
Phosphoric Acid
Unrefined Brown Sugar
Sea Salt
Garlic Powder
Natural Mesquite
Potassium Sorbate
Vitamin E
Cinnamon
Rosemary

Hmmm... definitely not going back to any other doggie jerky...

Tuesday Treats

How about bully sticks? They're stinky. They're kinda nasty looking, but man, dogs love these! Just remember - don't let them chew them on light carpet if your dog is a drooler, otherwise Nature's Miracle (an enzymatic cleaner) will be your best friend. Rusty gets these in either his dog box (crate) or on his dog bed.

Generally you can find them at a pet store for cheap, but lately I've been preferring order doggie treats and pet supplies online. (Mostly because I've been finding great deals AND free shipping)

Best Bully's has great deals AND you can order in bulk. So if you want to save money - go for broke and go in on a box with a friend.

You can also order individual bully sticks, and I tend to go with the larger 12 inch THICK bully sticks instead of the regular ones.

Have fun with bully sticks!

Tuesday Treats

Free samples tend to end up in our treat bag such as this - Rachael Ray's Nutrish. (There's a link for a free sample too!) Now, you have to understand that we're not FEEDING Rusty this, nope, this is part of his treat bag. I personally don't see better nutritional value in this dog food than what we already feed him - Wellness Super5Mix, which he loves.

This is considered a low value reward (cut up cheese, hot dogs and tennis balls are Rusty's high value rewards), so he gets this for doing basics, like sitting, drop and walking. The command leave it will get a higher value reward - like a toss of a tennis ball!

Free samples of dog food make great low value treats, but try not to get 'Ol Yeller because that has no nutritional value at all. Each of the different pieces of Nutrish looks different and it must taste different too - but since I haven't tried her dog food yet (human grade treats I usually try, but shhhh... don't tell anyone!), I can't tell you what it tastes like!

Tuesday's Treat

Most large dogs have some sort of hip or joint problem. We're working on having that NOT happen. Larger dogs can get what's called hip dysplaysia and dogs can show signs of it as young as, well, puppies which is unfortunate. Dogs will show signs of pain and discomfort after exercise, long periods of sitting, standing or lying down. Happy Hips includes all the vitamins and minerals that your dog needs to help either with the pain OR to prevent it. And no, I'm NOT paid to advertise it - it's just what happens to work for us!

Make sure you have your dog x-rayed at a young age to determine its joint issues. Some dogs may NEVER have this happen and are happy as a clam until they die. Others have hip issues around 6 or 7, sometimes they don't even start until they're 10 or 11.
Bimmer Man and I had to put the Bimmer Dog to sleep last October because of bone cancer (which I'll get to at a later date, especially the signs and symptoms) so health issues I watch for every single day and anything that happens to enhance Rusty's health, I'll definitely give a try!

Tuesday Treats

Jerky. Jerky. Jerky.

If only Rusty could eat jerky all day. Then he'd go poo all night which is NOT what I want and it would NOT be good for his rear end either.

So, natural treats we go for the MONSTER. Rusty gets Wellness Super5Mix (which I'll go into depth later about food) but I thought I'd try Wellness treats too.

Given they're edible by dogs, I thought I'd try one too. The ingredients are all human grade which means that we can eat it too, even though it might not taste like human food should... But then again everyone's taste buds are different.

Carrying on - they don't really taste like much. They smell like jerky but they don't taste like! Rusty on the other hand absolutely loves them. Bribe to go into the dog box (crate), bribe to lay down, bribe to do whatever I want him to do... Yes, these work!

You can find them wherever Wellness brand is sold AND at Petco! I'm not trying to advocate Petco or anything but there's only 4 pet stores in my town: Petco, PetSmart, London Dog and T & T Pet Supply. They're a little more expensive but totally worth it!

Tuesday Treats

Rusty is an absolutely fabulous dog, after lots and lots of work, praise and TREATS he's become well adjusted (but um, still afraid of: the fridge, garbage cans, loud noises, beer boxes, etc...). Tuesdays will be dedicated to just that - TREATS!!!

Zuke's Z-filets, chicken flavored are Rusty's absolute favorite. They're $4.96 on the Zuke's website, but I've found them at Petco (not at PetSmart yet). They're all natural, have extra protein for high energy and are nice and tasty. They're on SALE right NOW at Petco for $4.39.

I break them up into smaller pieces because we'd go through the whole package in a week if I didn't. It does take Rusty about 3 minutes to devour a whole treat though.

I rate these an A for taste, naturally healthy and the high protein. Definitely give 'em a try! They are on the pricey side, but trust me, they're a fabulous treat to have on hand when training or just being a great puppy.

No worries! I'm in the poorhouse, so I'll have some definite doggie savings on here too including food sales AND treat sales!
